Currently in Rotation - Coconut Records

Jason Schwartzman’s 2nd album, Davy, came out yesterday and I have spent some time listening to it. If you remember Jason used to play drums in the band Phantom Planet around the same time that his acting career took off in the awesome film, Rushmore.

I fell in love with his first record, recorded under the name Coconut Records entitled Nighttimming and released in 2006. His vocals are slightly pitchy and full of angst, a nice fun Beatles sounds. I think he has followed that record up with an equally flowy, fun record. Davy to me is not unlike his first record, he didn’t take the vibe of the music in another direction, so it could best be described as a sequel. Some stand out tracks include, Wandering Around and Any Fun. Wandering Around is a mellow folk track with some great harmonizing. It is like a fun traveling tune. Any Fun on the other hand sounds like a bit like a Sergeant Pepper song that comes off as a bittersweet Dear John letter.

If you have seen him act you will definitely hear his voice, but the emotion he puts in the album is vaguely depressing, but you can hear the passion he puts in the songs. Check both these albums out on itunes! You won’t be sorry!!
