This morning I googled the word nigger. Now before you get up in arms, please hear me out. Adam and I were listening to a band yesterday called Lightspeed Champion. It is one guy named Devonte. He is a black man from the UK. This prompted Adam to ask if the N word had the same connotation in England as it clearly does in the United States.
So I googled it. Turns out that it originated from Portugal and also is a variation of the latin word for black. What we discovered (via Wiki) is that the word pretty much has an even more derogatory connotation in the UK than it does here, due largely in part to the fact that it encompasses all races with dark skin such as Indians and Pakistanis. I guess I am not surprised, but I didn’t notice as much racial difference when I was in London. I mean there were a lot of races intermingling and it didn’t seem like anyone had any problems with that.
I still sorta feel weird about googling it though…
