The Jinx

So I am embarking on a pretty big step in my life in the coming weeks and as I ponder whether or not to let you in on the secret I am reminded of the ancient idea of the Jinx. According to Wikipedia the origins are slightly fuzzy but the Jinx can best be traced back to a short story from 1910 that was written about baseball. In fact baseball often uses the term when referring to a player who is tempting fate, only to fall short. Kind of like talking about a no-hitter before it is over! Now as a lifetime Royals fan, I have seen and felt the effects of the jinx time and time again, so I am going to stay mum on my little life changing moment for the time being. But I still wonder if the jinx is really something to be concerned about. Can you, through the sheer force of the mind, change your stars? Does the fear of messing up alone cause something to go sour, thus solidifying the jinx as a real tangible worry? I know those are probably age old questions that no one can really answer, but just to stay on the safe side I am going to assume that even the notion of a jinx is very real and I shouldn’t take it for granted. Heck, even writing this now I worry that I have already jinxed my moment in time. Maybe it is all bull anyways and one can rely on an even more clichéd proverb, ‘Everything Happens for a Reason’. This is something I have heard over and over in my lifetime. It is a pretty broad thing to say and even easier to justify, but somehow I think the jinx is probably stronger than some fluff notion involving EVERYTHING. I mean how can you take anything seriously when it involves such an extreme encompassing of life itself?
